Newport Township is a township in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,006 at the 2000 census.It consists of 6 towns: Alden Station, Sheatown, Newport Center, Glen Lyon, Wanamie and Lee.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 16.8 square miles (43.5 km²), of which, 16.4 square miles (42.4 km²) of it is land and 0.4 square miles (1.1 km²) of it (2.62%) is water.
As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 5,006 people, 1,789 households, and 1,118 families residing in the township. The population density was 306.1 people per square mile (118.1/km²). There were 2,166 housing units at an average density of 132.4/sq mi (51.1/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 90.17% White, 8.57% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.54% from other races, and 0.30% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.30% of the population.
There were 1,789 households out of which 24.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.5% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.5% were non-families. 32.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.87.
In the township the population was spread out with 16.1% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 33.4% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 127.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 129.6 males.
The median income for a household in the township was $32,073, and the median income for a family was $40,987. Males had a median income of $28,466 versus $22,035 for females. The per capita income for the township was $16,930. About 9.3% of families and 14.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 24.4% of those under age 18 and 14.8% of those age 65 or over.
May 2004, Newport Township Board of Commissioners met for a regular monthly meeting. There was a discussion on ways to revitalize our community. The Board listened to comments, and twenty people committed to help in this effort. The Commissioners set up a public meeting, on May 17, 2004, at the Township Municipal Building in Wanamie, to seek resident input. As a result of this meeting the Newport Township Community Organization was formed.
